On June 18th the Department of Music at the University of Montevallo celebrated the 14th annual week-long Young Musicians’ Camp. During that time, Dr. Alan Goldspiel conducted classes in music technology, music history, music theory, and guitar. Each year the camp provides young musicians the opportunity to create and perform music on a university campus while working directly with professional faculty artists.

As area head, Dr. Goldspiel spent 6-plus hours daily giving private lessons, coaching ensembles, and teaching classes in creation and production in the Davis Music Building computer tech lab.  In addition to area specific instruction, he also taught classes in music history and music theory that were geared to enhance the student’s studio work.

The week-long intensive ended with a public student performance in LeBaron Recital Hall. Music technology students shared their new electronic creations and guitar students performed classical and pop music that was learned and rehearsed during the week.

When asked about his intense involvement with the Young Musicians’ Camp, Goldspiel stated “I enjoy working with the young students in this camp environment because these motivated students make so much progress in such a short time. They are working at a very high level and they regularly rise to the challenges we set for them all while having a great time in the process. It’s very rewarding to be a part of their musical journey.”

As Chair of the Music Department, Goldspiel worked with camp directors to make sure that all 221 campers had a great time learning, performing, and enjoying traditional camp activities at the University of Montevallo.
