The Magic Shtetl Klezmer Band was honored to be invited to join in on the Chez Lulu Fall Oohlala! Lantern Parade and Harvest Party last month. It was quite a unique performance at the Chez Lulu restaurant with belly dancers, poetry readings, and a parade throughout the Village as well.

The rainy October evening lead to the Magic Shtetl Klezmer Band performing in an improvised stage to protect the Klezmer musicians and their instruments. The stage was a large travel van that surprisingly managed to fit Ron Alexander and his full-size standup Bass, Alan Goldspiel and his guitar and amp, and later on even Robert Janssen and his clarinet managed to squeeze in by sitting in the doorway of the ‘stage’ when heavier rain set in.

Although, it was an unconventional gig for the band, the Klezmer musicians were up to the challenge and happy to be a part of the celebrations. They were met with a very enthusiastic and welcoming audience who ate, danced, clapped, and cheered along with the Magic Shtetl Klezmer Band’s music all evening long.

The band would like to thank the owners of Chez Lulu, Carole Griffin and Shea Rives, for asking us to be a part of the celebrations and for being so warm and accommodating especially given the unexpected rain challenge.

Chez Lulu is located in Mountain Brook’s beautiful English Village, just one mile from the Birmingham Zoo, at 1909 & 1911 Cahaba Rd., Birmingham, AL 35223.

The Magic Shtetl Klezmer Band was formed by Alan Goldspiel in 2010 to celebrate the opening of the art exhibit Darkness Into Light sponsored by the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center and has varying members depending on how large or small a band is required. The band has performed throughout central Alabama and is available for events both public and private. For more information about or to contact the Magic Shtetl Klezmer Band Click Here!
