Dr. Alan Goldspiel was proud to take part in the National Association of Composers USA (NACUSA) Mid-South Chapter’s New Music Recital on Sunday, December 1st.
The concert took place at the Ed Cabell Theatre on the campus of the University of North Georgia in Oakwood, Georgia at 4 p.m.
The performances ranged from solo instrumentals to mixed media and the styles ran the gamut of classical to abstract.
Dr. Alan Goldspiel (classical guitar) performed two movements from his three-movement solo guitar piece, In Dreams. He performed the first movement, Of Venus, and the third movement, Before Awakening.
In Dreams is a three-movement work for solo guitar based on the art work of Salvador Dali. The notion of the dream and its sometimes other-worldliness is explored visually and sonically often in works of art. The movements take their inspiration from the surrealist’s perspective of time, the absurd, and the interesting juxtapositions of characters and space.
Later in the concert, Goldspiel returned to the stage to perform Ken Davies’ solo guitar piece, Imprints. The piece was written by Davies for Goldspiel and was inspired by the ‘imprints’ left on the composer’s mind of not only his own attempts at playing guitar as a youth but also, the impressions that hearing fine classical guitar works later in life gave him.
Other composers’ works heard during the concert were David R. Peoples, Joe L. Alexander, and Cecilia Suhr.
