Dr. Alan Goldspiel returned for the fourth year in a row to perform as an 18th Century Spanish Guitarist during the Independence Day celebrations at American Village in Montevallo, Alabama.

Dressed in period-appropriate attire, Goldspiel’s three concerts in the Colonial Chapel were a delight to the audience.

During his performances, Goldspiel, a Montevallo resident and Department Chair of Music at the University of Montevallo, performed Popular Hits of the 18th Century on Spanish guitar and gave short historical references and comedic insights before he played each piece.

The theme of his performances this year was the music of George Washington’s era. Goldspiel researched and arranged all the pieces, originally composed for fife and drums, so they could be played on Spanish guitar, which was no small feat.

Pieces performed during the July 4th concerts were The President’s March, Washington’s March, Beneath a Weeping Willow’s Shade, Successful Campaign, General Burgoyne’s March, Gavotte and Minuet by Alexander Reinagle, Brandywine Quick-Step, and the ever-popular Yankee Doodle with three variations.
